7 signs that you are underpaid
If you have been wondering whether you are underpaid, you should look out for the following signs.
1. your colleagues earn more money than you do
Although people don’t like to talk about salary in the office, they do occasionally discuss it at work. So if you notice that a colleague with the same experience and position is earning more than you, this is a sign that you are being underpaid. However, question the reasons for this and renegotiate your salary if necessary.
2. your salary increase was years ago
Your experience and skills should be reflected in your salary and increase continuously. For example, you should negotiate a pay rise of at least 2 percent in an annual performance review. Because less than 2 percent is at most compensation for rising costs, but not a salary increase. If, on the other hand, you have not had a pay rise for a long time, this indicates that you are underpaid.
3. salary negotiations are avoided
You may have already tried to discuss your salary with your boss. If there has been no time for this so far and this discussion is being avoided, this is also a sign of underpayment.
4. more responsibility or a new position at the old salary
You get a lot of praise, a new title, more responsibility or bigger projects, but the same salary? That’s bad! Companies often try to push down employees’ salaries. That’s why you should always negotiate your salary in such cases.
5. no participation in the company's success
Is your department doing a good job, growing and making a significant contribution to the company’s success? Then this should also be reflected in your pay. However, this often only happens if you actively ask for and demand your share of the profits.
6. your job is in demand
If there is a shortage of skilled workers in your industry and there are many vacancies, you should also receive a good salary. Technical professions are often in high demand and you may be actively approached by headhunters for new positions. Feel free to bring this up in your conversation with your boss

Underpaid - what now?
Your salary check has shown that you are underpaid in your company. But what are the next steps?
Basically, the aim is to renegotiate the salary and come to an agreement with the employer. To do this, it is helpful not to go into the interview unprepared.
1st performance folder
During the interview, it is important to show what you have achieved in concrete terms and what successes you have been able to achieve. The best way to do this is to create a performance folder in which you document your past achievements and successes in writing. You can also add what your future goals are. This will give you confidence in the interview and summarize your added value for the company.
2. know your market value
It is crucial that you know your market value. This is because education, years of professional experience, further training, successes and performance all influence it. Your performance portfolio will give you an initial overview. With our salary check, however, you can find out how high your market value is and how much salary you can confidently demand.
3rd salary negotiation date
The next step is to make an appointment with your boss. A date should be set in advance for a salary negotiation and sufficient time should be set aside. However, this appointment only makes sense if some time has passed since your last salary negotiation or if your tasks or position have changed.
4. negotiate offer
You may not like talking about your salary and may not feel comfortable negotiating it. Many people agree to the employer’s first offer without negotiating it further.
But there is usually some leeway when it comes to salary. Be brave and make a counter-offer that you can agree on. This usually results in a higher salary than accepting the first offer.
5. practice makes perfect
Bosses and employers have a few tricks up their sleeves when it comes to salary negotiations. They know how to throw you off your game and negotiate your salary down. It is therefore important to be prepared for objections and counterarguments. It is best to practise the salary negotiation in advance so that you are confident going into the interview,
6. agree on goals or improve the position
In your annual meeting, set specific and measurable goals for what you want to achieve in the following year. You should also document these in writing. This way, you will be well prepared for the salary negotiations in your next interview.
You can also improve your salary by expanding your qualifications. Look for targeted training and further education or take on additional tasks or projects. This will allow you to improve your position and responsibility and therefore also your salary.
7. change of company
If you are not satisfied with your salary negotiations, you should consider changing jobs. However, you should also find out in advance whether you will actually be paid better at another company.
