What is meant by supply chain and logistics?
While supply chain refers to the entire value creation process, logistics is only one part of the value chain. Logistics focuses on the storage, transportation and distribution of products from procurement to final delivery.
Supply chain management, on the other hand, coordinates and controls the entire value creation process as well as the collaboration of all stakeholders involved, such as manufacturers and suppliers. The aim of supply chain management is to improve the efficiency of processes and thus optimize profits.
Which areas arise here?
Logistics can be divided into 4 sub-areas :
- Procurement logistics: This area is essential for the company’s success and is responsible for the procurement and supply of goods. It is responsible for determining and checking requirements, ordering and goods receipt, for example.
- Production logistics: This is where the flow of goods is planned, managed and controlled with the aim of achieving maximum efficiency. Tasks in production logistics include production organization, order planning and scheduling, optimizing transport routes and minimizing production costs.
- Distribution logistics: This is responsible for ensuring that products reach customers as quickly as possible. The tasks include selecting locations and optimizing order processing as well as coordinating distribution networks.
- Disposal logistics: This area is responsible for the disposal of residual stocks and materials. Its tasks include reducing waste and improving waste recycling as well as coordinating the disposal system within the company.
Supply chain managers (m/f/d), on the other hand, are needed in various departments. They can often be found in production, warehouse or materials management. But they are also needed in logistics marketing, controlling, purchasing and procurement. Tasks include customer relationship management and optimizing the supply chain in terms of costs, resources and flexibility.
